San Luis Obispo to Monterey

People travel from all around the world just to take the drive along Route 1 or the Pacific Coast Highway through Big Sur. It is roughly 135 miles from San Luis Obispo up to Monterey, but that 135 miles will take you over three hours, due to the twisty and curvy nature of much of the road. Along the way you will pass alongside amazing coastline, beautiful beaches, superb hikes, and a host of stupendous attractions filled with natural beauty found nowhere else. The drive alone is well worth it, but you'll want to make several stops along the way.

Leaving San Luis Obispo, home to Bubblegum Alley and the Madonna Inn, you'll take California Highway 1 north. The first town you'll pass is Morro Bay, easily seen by the massive rock jutting out of the ocean off its coastline. From Morro Bay on, you'll never be far from the ocean. Cayucos is next, then the small town of Harmony with population 18! From there you'll pass Cambria and San Simeon, home to Hearst Castle. Soon after San Simeon, it's up into the cliffs, where Route 1 hugs the side of mountains to the right, while deathly drops into the beautiful blue waters below sit just off to the left.

The Big Sur area starts unofficially at Ragged Point, shortly after you will officially enter Monterey County.
