Apple Boulders
27665 Hwy 74,
Perris, California
92570
(Wasson Canyon Road)
Perris off of Interstate 15 down in Riverside County has had a uniquely painted rock formation since 1983. If you're heading east / northeast from 15 on Highway 74, the boulders will be located to the north of the road, where the highway intersects with Wasson Canyon Road. There's a stop light there, and you can turn left from 74, through the interesection, onto a dirt patch in front of the rock.
The boulder formation looks like someone split open an apple, different slices of the apple being obvious. It is maintained by the locals, but might have been painted by a local artist in 1983 named Neil Larson, who originally lived near the rocks. There are some other painted boulders in the surrounding area, though nothing as interesting or as detailed as the Apple Boulders.
